Traverse City proposes pedestrian-only street to help social distance when businesses reopen - Detroit Free Press

As businesses and cities across the country begin open up, new plans are emerging to best protect individuals from the novel coronavirus.

In downtown Traverse City, those accommodations could include closing two blocks of a street to vehicles to allow people more space to social distance.

The Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is proposing to close a two-block stretch of Front Street in the core of downtown to provide businesses and pedestrians the necessary space, reports the Traverse Ticker. The DDA CEO, Jean Derenzy, will propose the plan to Traverse City commissioners at the May 18 meeting, according to the report.

The plan would close the 100 and 200 blocks of Front Street, from Park Street to Union Street, beginning in June. The closure to vehicles would remain in effect at all hours of the day.

Restaurants and retail shops in the shopping area of downtown Traverse City would be able to use the additional space for dining or display of store goods to reduce crowding in the buildings, the Ticker reports. Removable barricades would be placed at either end of closed section with the ability to move for emergency vehicles.
