The conference announced on Wednesday a collective commitment among its 12 member schools a campaign to facilitate registration and acquisition of mail-in ballots for all willing and eligible student-athletes ahead of the 2020 national election.
"This is an important initiative for our Conference and our student-athletes," CU Athletic Director Rick George said. "CUnited has focused on taking action, and this effort to get more young people registered to vote in the upcoming election is a great example. I am very proud that our student-athletes are using their collective voice to drive this initiative on our campus."
CU has created several initiatives to combat racism and push for social justice. This summer it organized CUnited, a committee of student-athletes, coaches and staff members to "take action for racial and social change by acting as catalysts for anti-racist education, reinforcing accountability and delivering a commitment toward building an anti-racist Buff community that ensures empowerment, equity and inclusion for all." The committee has already made an impact with educational sessions for staff and student-athletes.
In line with the Pac-12's voting initiative and 2020 National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 22, CUnited is holding a series of sessions on Sept. 8, 9 and 10 to educate and register CU's willing and eligible student-athletes, coaches and staff.
In early June, a group of CU student-athletes led a march of student-athletes, coaches, staff, fans and community members through Boulder in support of racial justice after the killing of George Floyd.
In July, the Pac-12 announced a series of initial steps to promote social justice and combat racism, including the formation of a social justice & anti-racism advisory group composed of a cross section of university athletics and academic leaders and student-athletes, representing all 12 universities.

At the root of voting is education, and it is imperative that CU helps student-athletes identify their positions on the issues that our country faces. We have an opportunity as young people to make our voices heard and make a change in our communities. Democracy only goes so far as to represent those who choose to participate in it. So, I implore my coaches, teammates, support staff, and fellow student-athletes to be proactive in the 2020 election and beyond."

"Voting is a birth right we are born with as Americans, and once we hit 18 we can finally punch our diplomatic ticket. Voting is something many of us take for granted and a privilege many people are not awarded. Voting is something my ancestors fought for, and right now the most important way we can invoke change. My grandma told me it is not enough to just vote. We need to know what we are voting for and become more educated voters but the first step is to register to vote. It is so important for young people to register to vote because this is the way we can use our voice and make the world hear us. This voting registration drive CUnited is putting on for CU Athletics is a way to prepare us for Election Day in November. Our voices matter today and every day; let's not take what many people wish they have for granted. Let's go out, register to vote and become educated voters because many peoples' lives may depend on it. Let's be a voice for people who are not afforded the privilege to use their own.
