Trib Total Media President and CEO Jennifer Bertetto has been named to the board of directors of the World Association of News Publishers, an organization representing media organizations internationally.

The World Association of News Publishers, or WAN-IFRA, is headquartered in Paris, France, and Frankfurt, Germany. The organization, founded in 1948, is a network of 3,000 news publishing companies and technology entrepreneurs, along with 60 member publisher associations that represent 18,000 publications in 120 countries.

The organization’s goal is to protect the rights of publishers and journalists to operate independent media while providing services to help organizations prosper in a digital world.

“It is a privilege to serve on the board of WAN-IFRA, representing the News Media Alliance,” said Bertetto, who was named in 2018 to the board of News Media Alliance, a group representing more than 2,100 news organizations in the United States.

“In this role, I will be tasked with elevating issues to WAN-IFRA, which arise in the United States and may have a global impact on media internationally,” she added.

WAN-IFRA is directed by an international board made up of national publisher associations and top management officials of media companies. Advisory boards that represent different working communities of the organization — like the World Editors Forum and Global Alliance for Media Innovation — support the overall mission of the board, along with regional committees and special interest working groups.

“WAN-IFRA focuses on three pillars, media sustainability, press freedom and journalism, and media innovation,” Bertetto said. “I look forward to getting to know my colleagues, who represent over 90 countries, to discuss how these issues impact us all in different ways and work toward best practices and common solutions.”

Members of the World Association of News Publishers include organizations from countries across the globe, including The New York Times, Bloomberg and The Associated Press, with executive board members from Toronto, Ontario-based The Globe and Mail and Singapore Press Holdings.

“It is an honor for our independently-owned newspaper from Western Pennsylvania to have a seat at the table with some of the largest publishers in the world,” Bertetto said. “I look forward to the collaboration, which will help us to find new monetization models, share best practices and work collectively toward the greater good of our industry and journalism as a whole.”

Bertetto joined the Tribune-Review in 1998. In 2015, she was named president and chief executive officer of Trib Total Media. In 2016, she was named chairman of the board of directors for Trib Total Media. She also serves as president of Trib Total Media’s affiliate company, 535media.
