Topline

Actress Gina Carano has been dropped from the Disney+ Star Wars show, The Mandalorian after she shared a post on social media comparing the treatment of Republicans in the U.S. to Jewish people during the Holocaust, Lucasfilm annouced Wednesday night after several users on social media had demanded her removal.

Key Facts

A Lucasfilm spokesperson told the press Carano is “not currently employed” by the Disney-owned studio and there were “no plans for her to be in the future.”

The spokesperson then added Carano’s posts “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

On her Instagram story, Carano shared a post which talks about persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany and ends by asking “How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

Another photo on Carano’s Instagram story was a photo of a person with several masks covering their face and head with the caption “Meanwhile in California.”

Both posts had been removed from the actress’ feeds on Wednesday.

Carano who played Cara Dune on The Mandalorian has previously made several controversial comments and according to the Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm had been looking for a reason to fire her for months and Wednesday’s post was the final straw.

Key Background

Wednesday’s post was not Carano’s first brush with controversy on social media in the past few months. Last November, Carano posted a tweet mocking Democrats and masking policies during the pandemic. Prior to that she had sent out a tweet suggesting without evidence that voter fraud may have occurred during the 2020 presidential election. The Hollywood Reporter citing sources reported that Lucasfilm planned to unveil Carano as the star of her own Disney+ series during its December investor’s day keynote but the plan was scrapped following her November tweets. Several other spinoffs of the Mandalorian are being worked on by executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, which could have also potentially starred Carano’s character. The Mandalorian, a Star Wars spin-off TV show, has been one the flagship shows of Disney’s streaming service.
