A 19-year-old Riverside man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after police investigated a social media post showing the possible killing of a dog.
The man was arrested on suspicion of cruelty to an animal and illegal possession of metal knuckles, the Riverside Police Department said in a Sunday statement. He was issued a “notice to appear” citation and released from custody a few hours later, due to the current emergency bail schedule for non-violent offenses, police said.
On Saturday, Feb. 13, at about 7:45 p.m., police received a call regarding a social media post showing the possible killing of a dog. The video depicted a small dog with a large laceration to its neck and gasping for air as a young man stood over it making comments about what he just committed, police said.
Based on the social media profile of the person who posted the video, Riverside officers went to an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Lou Ella Lane to search for the suspect. When they arrived, officers observed a man matching the description of the suspect from the video, police said.
The man was detained and found to be in possession of illegal metal knuckles and also had fresh blood stains on his clothing and cuts on his hands. Officers searched his apartment and a four-to-six month old Chihuahua was found in the suspect’s bedroom suffering from a severe neck injury and barely alive, according to police.
The Riverside County Department of Animal Services transported the dog to an emergency pet clinic. Veterinarians determined the dog would not survive and had to be euthanized, Riverside police reported.
“This appeared to be a very savage act committed toward this poor animal,” said Julie Bank, Animal Services Director. “It is very unfortunate the dog could not be saved.
“Nonetheless, we appreciate Riverside Police taking the lead in this suspected cruelty case.”
