DEKALB, Ill. – Monday was Media Day for the Northern Illinois University football team as Huskie student-athletes and head coach Thomas Hammock met with members of the local media after the fourth practice of fall camp.Hammock began his press conference by joking that he had fully charged his iPad in anticipation of a zoom meeting with the media, despite Monday's session returning to an in-person format.
"One thing I believe in, trust is earned through consistency," Hammock said as he began talking about the 2021 Huskies. "What I have seen over the last eight months, I really have a good feel of our football team. I trust our team, I trust their level of commitment, I trust their level of discipline, both on and off the football field."
Hammock reflected upon last fall when the Huskies had 40 freshmen in camp and the great strides that have been made by that group over the past year.
"As we had practice yesterday for the first time in helmets and shoulder pads, those same guys that we were so unsure about a year ago, now you look at them and say, 'wow, what a difference a year makes,'" said Hammock.
With the first Monday of camp also comes, has Hammock explains, the grind as excitement wanes but the evaluation process of his football team continues daily.
"Practice four was this morning, like any training camp everybody is excited for the first day," Hammock explained. "You are a little bit less excited for the second day and so forth, and so forth. So now, for us, the grind begins. The grind is, we are going to find the 22 best players that are going to be the toughest guys to get ready for September 4th (the opener at Georgia Tech). We evaluate every rep, we evaluate every practice, the depth chart changes daily, and guys understand that the best guys will play."
Prior to Monday's Media Day activities, the Huskies held their fourth practice of camp. With rain and storms in the area, the two-hour workout was moved inside the Chessick Practice Center. Monday was NIU's penultimate day in helmets and shoulder pads before the Huskies move into full pads on Wednesday night.
Camp will continue with the fifth practice of the fall on Tuesday morning.
NIU opens the season at Georgia Tech on September 4 before welcoming fans back to the stands at full capacity in Huskie Stadium beginning with the home opener versus Wyoming on September 11. Kickoff for the game is at 12:30 p.m. (CT) and the game will honor First Responders and Health Care Heroes, while also serving as a Welcome Back Fans celebration.
