The Broncos announced a series of social justice initiatives Wednesday through a new “Broncos Inspire Change” program.

The program was created after a team meeting and breakout sessions Aug. 27 with the players, president/CEO Joe Ellis, general manager John Elway and coach Vic Fangio.

“I feel like it covers everything that we talked about when we canceled practice (on Aug. 27) and we had meetings for the day on social justice initiatives,” safety Justin Simmons said. “I think the most important thing about this is that it’s player-led and player-driven. This isn’t a (list of ideas) that have (been created) without the players’ say-so.”

“Broncos Inspire Change” will revolve around education, awareness and funding, diversity and inclusion and activism.

  • Education. The players will hold a “Power Hour” meeting every Tuesday “dedicated to player-led social justice causes,” and new initiatives in youth education and mentorship.
  • Awareness and funding. In addition to a $250,000 annual contribution from the Broncos toward player-led social justice work, Elway has pledged $100,000 this year to player-designated police reform priorities locally.
  • Diversity and inclusion. The Broncos’ newly formed “Diversity & Inclusion Committee” will focus on those two issues inside and outside the organization. The team has committed to adding a full-time, senior-level position dedicated to ensure diversity and inclusion and will have an annual “Career Combine,” for minority candidates.
  • Activism. The Broncos will offer full use of Mile High as a polling location and/or ballot box location for the Nov. 3 general election.

“It’s really important to a lot of guys so we’ll just have to make sure that we’re focusing on football, but also know, ‘Hey, we’re doing some stuff to make some changes happen.’”

Footnote. The Broncos returned outside for Wednesday’s practice. Outside linebacker Von Miller (ankle) and inside linebacker Mark Barron (hamstring) did not work. … Broncos fan Rob Garner was among three NFL fans who were honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, as a part of the “Ford Hall of Fans,” program. Garner was presented with a jacket and ring by Ford.
