Democratic Senator Joe Manchin wants the social spending package that would encompass the bulk of President Joe Biden’s economic agenda cut by more than half to $1.5 trillion.
Manchin’s proposed topline, reinforced by him on Thursday, deepens a rift with the progressive wing of the Democratic party, intensifying pressure on Biden to force some compromise in order to salvage his signature longer-term programs. Progressives have vowed to block a separate $550 billion infrastructure bill if there’s no deal on the social-spending program.
