Santa Monica College Continues Communication, Media & Design Series September 21 - Santa Monica Daily Press

Santa Monica College (SMC) continues its Communication, Media & Design Series this fall with a line-up of presentations by industry professionals who will talk about their work and developments in the fields of communication, media, and design today. The series returns on Tuesday, September 21.


All presentations in the series are free, and will be held online as live virtual events. A Zoom link to each talk will be available with the listing on the event date on the SMC Events calendar at smc.edu/calendar. To attend the events, Zoom software must be installed on the viewer’s computer (free download available at zoom.com).


The Communication, Media & Design Series line-up for fall 2021 is:


• Tuesday, September 21, at 7 p.m. — TV Editor Allison Anastasio and Post Production Coordinator Parneille Walker: “Women in Entertainment” — SMC Professor Tim Conley will lead a discussion with TV Editor Allison Anastasio and Post Production Coordinator Parneille Walker about their careers working behind the scenes on popular TV shows. Anastasio has worked on shows for VH1, HBO, NBC, MTV, Wetpaint, and TBS network, and was nominated for an Emmy Award in Outstanding Picture Editing for her work on “Below Deck: Steamy Vibes,” a Bravo and 51 Minds Entertainment production. Walker has worked on shows for Fox, CW, Warner Bros., NBC, MTV, ABC, and Disney, and most recently joined the ABC Studios television series “Grown-ish” as a Post Production Coordinator. • Thursday, September 30, at 9:45 a.m. — Photojournalist Ozier Muhammad: “Documenting Events that Changed the World” — Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist Ozier Muhammad will talk about his experiences covering major world events, from Nelson Mandela’s election in Africa to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. He will share his career journey and photojournalism advice acquired during his years as a staff photographer at the New York Times, Newsday, The Charlotte Observer, and Ebony magazine. Sponsored by the SMC Associates, SMC Communication & Media Studies Department, and SMC Design Technology Department.


• Friday, October 1, at 1 p.m. — Miya Osaki and Tina Park: “Reflective Design Methods for Changing Health Care: An Interactive Conversation with Diagram’s Miya Osaki and Tina Park” — Miya Osaki and Tina Park — founders of Diagram, a New York design studio dedicated to improving healthcare experiences and health outcomes by seeing through the eyes of the patient — will talk about how to gather and translate patient and provider insights to create better, more meaningful experiences and design tools that help patients better manage their conditions. Park, with significant experience in leading innovative research within healthcare organizations, pioneered a design research team at Johnson & Johnson’s Global Strategic Design Office implementing innovative research methods that uncover the voice of the patient. Osaki, who brings her skills in interaction design, human-centered research, storytelling, and behavior design to create experiences that improve outcomes and empower patients, is the former Director of Experience Design at Johnson & Johnson’s Global Strategic Design Office. • Friday, November 5, at 2 p.m. — Tristan Orford: “Know Your Worth: Compensation Conversations with Tristan Orford.” Tristan Orford — Senior Director, Global Compensation at Electronic Arts (EA) — will share his experience managing compensation initiatives at large companies. His interactive presentation is an introduction to the world of total rewards: how organizations think about the experience they create for the people who work there and the contracting they do with them. The presentation will explore total rewards concepts, then transition to applied frameworks that can be used to better understand this essential part of the job hunt process, and to help navigate personal career opportunities. Sponsored by the SMC Associates, SMC Business Department, SMC Communication & Media Studies Department, and SMC Design Technology Department.


• Monday, November 15, at 7 p.m. — Patrick Smith: “How to Start an Animation Business” — Installation artist, animator, and independent filmmaker Patrick Smith, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will talk about how to get started in the animation film business. He is a former Disney storyboard artist and MTV animation director, and is known for his metaphorical hand-drawn short films and experimental stop motion films. Smith has made award-winning animated films for PBS, has a YouTube channel with more than 200,000 subscribers, and is a fellow of the New York Foundation of the Arts and a curator for multiple international film and animation festivals.
