Former President Trump’s commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, told CBS’ Face the Nation Sunday the six-foot social distancing rule created to slow the spread of the pandemic was “arbitrary” and was in part reached as a compromise with a “political appointee” in the administration.

Key Facts

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recommended a social distancing rule of 10 feet, Gottlieb said, but the political appointee called it “inoperable” and said “society will shut down,” and the administration compromised on a six-foot distance.

Gottlieb said many people assume the rule traces to “some old studies” on the flu, which found droplets won’t travel further than six feet, though science later showed that Covid-19 travels through aerosols.

Gottlieb, who left the FDA in 2019 before the pandemic, criticized the decision as “a perfect example of the lack of rigor” in how public health decisions about the pandemic were made by the CDC.
