The ACC announced Thursday that its annual football media days event will be held virtually in 2020. The ACC Football Kickoff was originally scheduled for July 21-23 at The Westin hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina.
"As we continue to navigate the necessary steps surrounding COVID-19, transitioning this year's ACC Football Kickoff from an in-person event to a virtual experience is the best option to provide media access to our coaches and student-athletes," ACC commissioner John Swofford said. "Our primary focus in all decisions continues to be the health and welfare of our student-athletes, coaches, and in this specific instance, all of our media partners and event attendees."
The conference didn't release specifics on what its virtual media sessions will look like. It did, however, confirm that there will be interviews with Swofford, the 14 head coaches and student-athletes representing the schools.
The ACC's decision to cancel in-person media days in favor of a remote version makes it the final Power Five conference to do so. The SEC announced the cancellation of its event at the College Football Hall of Fame last week following the decisions of the Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12.
The COVID-19 pandemic has killed nearly 450,000 people worldwide and infected more than 8 million since it began to spread in January. It has caused the cancellation of several sporting events including the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments. Several other events, including The Masters and the Kentucky Derby, have been rescheduled for the fall.
