CLEVELAND, Ohio — The sports world, along with the rest of the world, has been turned upside down by the coronavirus and by the death of George Floyd due to excessive force by a Minneapolis policeman.
As a result, terms such as social distance and social justice have become everyday topics as people discuss sports on social media.
The biggest questions were, at first, centered around leagues either starting or restarting their seasons and protecting the players’ health. Now, social justice has become as big a topic as social distancing.
For example, the NBA seemed to agree on resuming play in Orlando on July 31, but a group of players led by Kyrie Irving began telling players not to play until social justice problems such as racism and police brutality are addressed.
The NFL was forging ahead with plans to start the 2020 season on time despite COVID-19. Now, the league’s sense of social justice will be tested like never before by players kneeling en masse during the national anthem to protest racial oppression.
MLB’s owners and players can’t agree on money, so social distancing and social justice don’t seem to enter into the equation.
