Along with listening actively, you need to make sure that you are there for others. Being a people person helps you in understanding them better as you're able to learn about their personalities and behaviors once you spend time with them. However, this does not mean that you should emotionally exhaust yourself in trying to figure everyone out. Make sure to maintain a balance and know where your emotional limits are.
Organizational Awareness
Another key aspect that falls under social awareness is organizational awareness. While being empathic enables you to understand others better, it also helps you learn more about the organization you are working at or with. Organizational awareness is important as it helps you figure out what goes on at the place you work. You do not want to lose out at any point so to build yourself, you should know all the minute details about your organization.
Essentially, to be able to get a hold of all the details, you need to become a people person. This will help you get all of the information that you require to be organizationally aware. The first thing that you need to do is figure out who the important figures are in the organization. You can do this by observing how the hierarchy works, who gives the orders and to whom you're required to report. It's not just your immediate boss that you should keep an eye on but also all of the powerful people in the organization. By identifying these people and their relationships, you can be kept abreast of all the politics that go on in the organization.
Your next step to organizational awareness is knowing the organization's mission, values, customs and culture. This will help you figure out what needs to be done in different situations. If you're completely oblivious to what goes around in the organization, you'll find yourself in a tough spot. The more aware you are of all of the actions that are taken in the organization, the better prepared you will be to take care of yourself. Learn about the actions that are rewarded and those that are frowned upon. Go over all the rules and requirements that are mentioned on the official pages of your organization to avoid any issues.
Organizational awareness helps you understand everything you need to about a particular organization. This further helps you make the correct choices and decisions so that you can be rewarded and avoid anything that might get you into trouble.
Service Orientation
Being service-oriented mainly refers to understanding the needs of your clients and being able to deliver exactly what they want. The only way you can understand the needs of others is through developing empathy. Once you're able to understand what the other person expects or wants, you'll be able to provide them with just that. You can not expect to be a service-oriented individual if you aren't a people person. You need to be able to understand the needs of others, and what better way to do that than communicating with them?
Social awareness is not a one-step jump that you can achieve overnight. A lot of thought and research goes into it. Whether we talk about empathy, organizational awareness or service orientation, you need to make sure that you're always attentive to what's going on. This way, you'll be able to grasp all the important details quickly and be more socially aware, which, in turn, will lead to you being more emotionally intelligent!
