TRENTON (CBS) — Face coverings are now required to be worn in New Jersey while indoors and outdoors at public places. Gov. Phil Murphy signed an executive order on Wednesday mandating the use if face coverings while in public if social distancing cannot be ensured.
The new mandate is expected to be “enforceable.”
There are face covering exceptions for individuals who are under the age of two, eating or drinking at an outdoor dining establishment, when eating a mask would inhibit health or safety.

The order will be in addition to a previous order Murphy signed that required masks to be worn while indoors at businesses.
Murphy also announced a change that will allow more restaurants to open for outdoor dining. Any restaurant that has areas with fixed roofs and two open sides comprising over 50% of the total wall space are now considered outdoors, in light of the air flow.

New Jersey officials reported 335 new coronavirus cases Wednesday as the statewide total topped 174,000. There were also 53 additional COVID-19-related deaths and the death toll now stands at 13,476.
The new outdoor mask mandate comes in an effort to reverse the recent increase in new coronavirus cases across the state.
As of Wednesday, the state’s rate of transmission exceeds 1.0 for the first time in 10 weeks, Murphy explained earlier this week. This means for every new case of COVID-19, that case is leading to at least one other new case.
Several recent outbreaks have been directly tied to traveling to COVID-19 hotspots.
The state has expanded its travel advisory to impact 19 states across the nation, including Delaware.
