This morning, the Diversity Coalition of Hot Springs will hold a rally in downtown Hot Springs for social justice and to diminish the power of racism in Hot Springs.

We will first be making rally signs at Democratic Party Headquarters, 608 W. Grand Ave. from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The rally will begin downtown by the Federal Building on Reserve Street from 1-4 p.m.

Social justice imposes on each of us a personal responsibility to collaborate with others, at whatever level of the "common good" we participate, to design and continually perfect our city/community of Hot Springs as tools for personal and social development.

Typically, those who strive for social justice seek to enhance the well-being of individuals in our city/community of Hot Springs through equal access to health care, the justice system and access to economic opportunity.

Social justice assigns the rights and duties in the institutions of our city/community of Hot Springs, which enables people to receive the basic benefits and burdens of cooperation. Social justice helps us work toward celebrating diversity in our city/community of Hot Springs.

Social justice can encompass many issues, but ultimately, it is a crucial component of healing many of the deep divisions our community is experiencing. While some in our city/community may criticize the idea of social justice or the need for swift action to solve some of our city/community's deep economic and racial issues, a proactive approach on social justice will lead to a better, brighter city/community of Hot Springs in which to live.

There are many issues that encompass social justice. The bottom line, however, is that social justice seeks equality, disfavors discrimination, and prioritizes fairness in our day-to-day lives.

I disagree with the notion of social justice being a cynical or disingenuous force rather than a positive force. I believe that social justice is necessary to heal the divides that plague our city/community of Hot Springs.

Considering the importance of social justice in healing some of our current divides, you may be wondering what you can do to increase the speed of change in our society.

Luckily, we have more power than we think.

One of the most effective things that we can do is vote. Voting for candidates that are committed to pursuing social justice in our city/community of Hot Springs will go a long way in actually seeing that change happen.

We as a city/community of Hot Springs can devote our attention to electing candidates who are seeking elected office, both at the local and state level, pursuing office at the local level are just as important. Whether we are voting for mayor, city director, judges or justices of the peace, our local elected officials have significant power to pursue social justice in our city/community of Hot Springs.

Social justice is a topic that some people may find uncomfortable. By touching on issues like race, gender, and income, it is easy for people to become defensive and resistant to change.

That said, social justice has become increasingly important in our city/community of Hot Springs. Diversity and equality are ideas that simply cannot be ignored. But by pursuing social justice and working to make these ideas more prominent in our city/community of Hot Springs, we can heal many of the divisions that are plaguing our city/community of Hot Springs.

Finally, being aware of social justice is helpful in and of itself. Understanding the issues and articulating those issues to close family and friends makes a huge difference. These one-on-one conversations go a long way in winning hearts and minds and convincing others that social justice is a big deal.

While you may not see real change right away, rest assured that your efforts are extremely important.

James C. Lowery is the committee chair of the Diversity Coalition of Hot Springs.
