WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Tuesday criticized most mainstream media for its hypocritical coverage of the Hunter Biden scandal by insisting it was “Russian disinformation” until it emerged last week that President-elect Joe Biden’s son is the subject of a federal tax probe.
At a briefing Tuesday afternoon, McEnany noted how many newsrooms had dramatically changed their tune after ignoring a New York Post expose in October that exclusively reported on emails from Hunter Biden that now are at the center of a federal probe.
“Interesting pre-election and post-election coverage too on the Hunter Biden scandal which was not covered at all by many outlets in the lead-up to the election,” McEnany told reporters after condemning their handling of the Rep. Eric Swalwell Chinese spy controversy.
“On October 15, you had a New York Times headline that said, ‘Trump said to be warned that he was being given Russian disinformation over Hunter Biden,'” she said.
“Now, December 10, just a few months later, your Times headline is ‘Investigation of Hunter Biden is likely to hang over Biden as he takes office,'” she went on.
“Really interesting turn of events and good for those who covered what was the story all along and not Russian disinformation,” McEnany said.
Hunter Biden, 50, disclosed last week that he is under federal investigation for possible tax fraud — with a report saying the Justice Department is examining his shady overseas business dealings.
In October, The Post reported on the contents of a laptop hard drive that reportedly belonged to former Vice President Joe Biden’s scandal-scarred son and included emails showing how he tried to profit off his famous father’s position in the Obama administration.
Media outlets insisted the story was fake and refused to cover it while social media giants blocked their users from sharing The Post’s reporting — until last week’s bombshell that federal prosecutors are in fact probing Hunter Biden’s activities in China and Ukraine.
Politico claimed the story was “Russian disinfo” while National Public Radio managing news editor Terence Samuel said The Post’s reporting was irrelevant.
“We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories” but “pure distractions,” he said, dismissing the news as “a politically driven event.”
A diamond given to Hunter Biden by a since-vanished Chinese energy tycoon, also reported on by The Post, is said to be part of the ongoing tax fraud probe.
McEnany also criticized major news organizations like the Times and networks ABC, NBC and MSNBC for refusing to cover a damning Axios report that revealed that Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) had a years-long relationship with a suspected Chinese spy.
Democrats like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have stood behind the lawmaker, even amid fears that Swalwell, who serves on the House Intelligence Committee, may have been compromised.
