Why Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe Never Joined Social Media - Screen Rant

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has explained why he’s never bothered to join any form of social media. The 31-year-old actor remains one of the few high-profile celebrities who doesn’t have any form of personal social media account, prompting much dismay from many in his extensive fan base.

Of course, Radcliffe came of age throughout his tenure as Potter in the eight film saga, and during much of that time, celebrities on social media weren’t the common occurrence that they are today. Nonetheless, Radcliffe has remained highly in demand since making the final Potter film, taking on a very wide and unique variety of roles. To date he’s played everything from legendary beat poet Allen Ginsberg to a Neo-Nazi to an escaped political prisoner in his latest film, Escape From Pretoria. All the while, Radcliffe continues to prove to audiences and critics alike that he’s far more than the child actor who scored the role of a lifetime by becoming Harry Potter. It seems that Radcliffe always has a surprise in store for fans and his recent appearance on a popular celebrity hot wing show proved no exception.

While guest starring on the First We Feast YouTube series Hot Ones, Radcliffe honestly answered a question about social media from the show’s host, Sean Evans. Evans wanted to know just why Radcliffe has never chosen to have a social media account despite it being very much a part of so many celebrities’ lives. Radcliffe’s response was as well articulated and thought out as fans have come to expect from the star:

"I would love to say there's some incredibly thought out intellectual reason for this, because I considered getting a Twitter at one point and I 100 percent know that if I did you would all be waking up to stories of 'Dan Radcliffe gets into a fight with random person on Twitter’. When I was younger, not anymore thank God, I used to look up comments about myself on the internet and would read s*** like that. That is an insane and bad thing to do and to me Twitter and everything just sort of feels like an extension of that. Unless I was going to go on and read nice things about myself, which also feels like another kind of unhealthy thing to do. Other than that, I don’t honestly feel like I’m mentally strong enough but right now, I’m kind of alright with that."

Harry Potter Shocked

As anyone who has spent even a short matter of hours on most social media platforms can attest to, there is no shortage of issues with the past time. The internet is literally filled with stories of bullies and other problematic types berating people via social media and even, in some truly terrible cases, convincing others to kill themselves. When it comes to celebrities, things don’t get much better, either. Many actors and actresses have taken breaks from the medium, particularly after being verbally abused at the hands of trolls. And even if some users aren’t pestering celebrity accounts, there seems a million different possibilities for tense arguments and poorly made statements to circulate.

By now, enough time has passed that it’s clear Radcliffe isn’t doing himself or his career any harm by not being part of social media. In fact, had he been online during the very tense period in which Harry Potter creator JK Rowling came under fire for anti-trans comments, Radcliffe surely would have been overrun with comments, questions and so much more.
