A Burleson man who claims to work for Murder the Media News was arrested at his home Tuesday morning after the FBI identified him as being inside the Capitol building during the riot earlier this month, federal authorities said.

Nicholas DeCarlo, 30, has been charged with obstructing or impeding an official proceeding; knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; and parading or demonstrating on Capitol grounds, according to officials.

He is at least the seventh North Texan so far to be arrested for activities related to the violent Washington D.C. uprising.

DeCarlo, who is known as Nick, said he is an employee of “MT Media News,” which stands for Murder the Media News, according to a federal complaint.

He is pictured in photos on social media inside the Capitol and also bragged about storming the building on Jan. 6 and accomplishing the mission of shutting down Congress’ certification of the presidential election, the complaint said.

One photograph shows DeCarlo and another man posing in front of a door inside the Capitol. The words, “Murder The Media,” were etched into the door, according to the complaint. DeCarlo is wearing a “Murder the Media” shirt and hat in the photo, authorities say.

DeCarlo’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

DeCarlo was released on bond later in the day. He’s under home detention, and the judge ordered that his travel be limited to the Northern District of Texas and Washington DC where his case is expected to proceed, but he must stay away from the Capitol grounds.

The complaint says that a witness identified DeCarlo from a social media photo and reported it on Jan. 13. In the photo, DeCarlo and alleged rioter Nicholas Ochs of Hawaii are smoking inside the Capitol building, the complaint says. Ochs also has been charged, according to the FBI.

Ochs is founder of the Proud Boys’ Hawaii chapter. His attorney could not be reached for comment.

DeCarlo and Ochs are also featured in a YouTube video with the title, “Twas The Night Before REVOLUTION!!!!” The video streamed live on Jan. 6, showing DeCarlo and Ochs walking the streets of Washington D.C. in a crowd, the complaint says.

Ochs says in the video, “As we’ve been saying all day, we came here to stop the steal” and DeCarlo adds: “We did it,” the FBI says.

DeCarlo also says in the video that, “We did our job. We did our job,” authorities say.

In a Jan. 13 interview he gave to the Los Angeles Times, DeCarlo admitted to being inside the Capitol building, according to the complaint. He also said he and Ochs were “working as journalists.”

But DeCarlo is not a “credentialed reporter with the House Periodical Press Gallery or the U.S. Senate Press Gallery, the organizations that credential Congressional correspondents,” the complaint said.

The Times identified the “Thunderdome TV” channel on YouTube as one of the pair’s media platforms, the FBI says. The channel, created in 2012, has less than 600 followers, according to authorities.

Congress concluded certification of the election results overnight after the riot.

In a video posted to a fundraising website prior to his arrest, DeCarlo says he is an alternative news journalist. He said he and Ochs were dispatched to Washington to document the Jan. 6 events and to conduct “field reporting” and “satirical interviews.” He said he never expected what “unfolded.”

“We wanted to show everything that was happening,” he said.

DeCarlo, who asked for donations to help pay for his legal fees, said he was given no orders to leave while inside the Capitol building “covering the events” and did not vandalize anything.
