James Murdoch Slams "Media Property Owners" For "Spreading Disinformation" - Hollywood Reporter

The youngest son of billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch did not specifically mention Fox News when calling out media outlets for unleashing "insidious and uncontrollable forces."

James Murdoch, who split from his family's media empire last year, has criticized "media property owners" over election fraud and denialism claims that led to violent riots in the nation's capital.

"The sacking of the Capitol is proof positive that what we thought was dangerous is indeed very, very much so. Those outlets that propagate lies to their audience have unleashed insidious and uncontrollable forces that will be with us for years," Murdoch said in a Financial Times interview that was published on Friday.

The youngest son of billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch did not specifically mention Fox News, which is overseen by his father and his brother Lachlan Murdoch. Following Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election, personalities of the right-wing cable network have amplified President Donald Trump's false election fraud claims.

"I hope that those people who didn't think it was that dangerous now understand, and that they stop," Murdoch said, adding he had not "seen any evidence of that yet."

Murdoch and his wife Kathryn Murdoch shared in a statement to the FT that "spreading disinformation — whether about the election, public health or climate change — has real world consequences."

"Many media property owners have as much responsibility for this as the elected officials who know the truth but choose instead to propagate lies. We hope the awful scenes we have all been seeing will finally convince those enablers to repudiate the toxic politics they have promoted once and forever," the two added in their statement.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Fox News for comment.

James Murdoch broke from his family in August 2020, formally resigning from the board of directors of News Corp citing "disagreements over certain editorial content published" by its news outlets and "certain other strategic decisions."

After leaving the Fox fold, Murdoch started his own company, Lupa Systems, which has invested in technology companies and other firms. Lupa Systems has acquired stakes in Vice Media, tech startup Betalab, and is pursuing a stake in MCH Group, the parent company of the Art Basel fair. Lupa Systems and Joe Marchese's Attention Capital also acquired a majority stake in Tribeca Enterprises last year, the parent organization of the Tribeca Film Festival.
