Regarding your “As We See It” Editorial on Tuesday, I think you are misunderstanding the situation with social media and open access. Over the past decade or so there has been a move to remove common carrier status from internet services companies. Under Trump this change has been completed. The primary implications of this are these companies have, on one hand, lost immunity from liability for content carried on their systems and, on the other, are no longer obligated to provide service to all comers on equal terms (these go together). Given the extreme liabilities involved with some of the actions being discussed and planned on their systems these companies arguably have no choice but to close these accounts and services. This is fundamentally a matter of companies managing their liability, and not them responding to political pressure.
