“Even as it may seem you’re posting something among friends on Facebook, it could very easily be picked up and suddenly grow almost exponentially as it is shared throughout networks,” Laiola said. “For example, [looking at the degrees of separation logic], you have your circle of friends and they have their circle of friends and etc, etc. Before long, you can create a chain and connection with someone you never met and likely will never meet. That same thing can happen on social media at extreme levels. We’ve seen viral posts that get away from the original poster’s intent, or viral content that seems to spread in all different ways, especially now with the ways all our different platforms are integrated [prepped with share button to go to other platforms] so that everything can be shared amongst platforms that spreads even further.”
