SESSER (WSIL) -- Officials at Sesser-Valier Community Unit School District 196 are investigating multiple complaints of social media posts that appear to be spreading misinformation.
Superintendent Jason Henry tells News 3 the district received about three to four complaints last week from current and former members of the community.
Henry says the school district plans to release its findings at the conclusion of the investigation. The timetable of the investigation is unclear. Henry could not say who the district was investigating.
TEACHER'S INSTAGRAM POSTS
A former student from the school district contacted News 3 Tuesday morning and provided 12 photos and two videos via email.
The photos were screenshots of Instagram posts belonging to the profile 'JDHollis12'. The name 'Johnny Hollis' appears on the page beneath the profile picture.
The former student says the account belongs to Johnny Hollis, a history teacher at the junior high school. Henry could not say if the district was investigating Mr. Hollis or his social media account(s).
When asked if the posts violated school policy or the state's code of ethics, Henry says it's too early in the investigation to know.
News 3 attempted to reach out to Mr. Hollis via email but didn't hear back. An hour after News 3 sent the email, the Instagram user JDHollis12 switched their profile from 'public' to 'private'.
FORMER STUDENT'S STATEMENT
Some items shared on the Instagram user's page include a post that said "PLANDEMIC". The term refers to two videos that promoted misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Another post below appears sympathize with rioters at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. last week.
The former student, who wished to remain anonymous released this statement to News 3 Tuesday afternoon:
"I hope that the Sesser-Valier School District can have a thorough conversation regarding the impact that teachers have on students.
Mr. Hollis is a charismatic man who many look to in the community for guidance, including past and current students. However, the words that he shared on social media do matter.
Posts online represent a major issue in that they can be taken at face value without a face to face conversation to ask questions.
Suggesting that violence is inevitable due to a difference in political beliefs is concerning and I believe that Mr. Hollis has a responsibility as a teacher to be cautious with what content he posts publicly.
The violent actions taken by those at the US Capitol Building last week should be condemned.
Violence does not solve problems, it create them. I do believe the posts by Mr. Hollis do not align with the school's policy nor its philosophy.
This is a learning opportunity for the students and the staff at SV to discuss how we can come to a peaceful solution rather than a violent one."
