DAZN, DraftKings and former Sony Pictures chief Michael Lynton are among the investors.
Meadowlark Media, the content company founded by former ESPN on-air host Dan Le Batard and former ESPN president John Skipper, has raised $12.6 million in a Series A funding round.
The company says that participants in the round included DAZN (where Skipper was most recently chairman), DraftKings, Snap Inc. chairman (and former Sony Pictures chief) Michael Lynton, EMJ Ventures, Verance Capital, Wasserman and Carmen Busquets.
Meadowlark says that the initial round of funding will be used for key hires and to fund the first slate of projects. The first official project is a podcast hosted by Hank Azaria in character as the fictional sportscaster Jim Brockmire. The company also signed on Michael Schur and Jemele Hill as advisers, and is in talks with Adam McKay for a similar role.
“With the intense competition to retain audiences at established media and to attract customers to new streaming services, we and our investors see an exciting opportunity for Meadowlark to work with the industry’s best storytellers to add the highest quality sports-focused original programming to their existing entertainment offerings,” said Skipper in a statement announcing the funding.
