Punch Bowl Social, the place we gave zero stars in 2019, is reopening in Deep Ellum - The Dallas Morning News

Punch Bowl Social’s $5 million facility is reopening in Deep Ellum on April 28, 2021.

The 25,000-square-foot “amusement park of a restaurant,” as our critic called it in 2019, has endured as many up and downs as a game of ping-pong. (Which is one of the many games at Punch Bowl Social, along with bowling, arcades, foosball, putt putt and more.)

Here’s the history: Punch Bowl Social opened in Deep Ellum in late June 2019. It received a zero-star review from our critic in fall 2019. Another local Punch Bowl Social, in Fort Worth, closed in late 2019 about 10 weeks after it opened.

Punch Bowl Social pressed on at the corner of Good-Latimer Expressway and Main Street in Deep Ellum, but after the coronavirus pandemic took hold, the venue closed in late March 2020, as many other food-and-beverage businesses did. Punch Bowl’s then-parent company Cracker Barrel decided “not to rescue” it, Restaurant Business reported at the start of the pandemic. Then in August 2020, CEO Robert Thompson left, Nation’s Restaurant News reports. He founded the company in 2012.

The Deep Ellum venue reopened in September 2020, then closed again in early December 2020. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection that same month.

CrowdOut Capital has since purchased the business, and it has reemerged from bankruptcy. Robert Cornog is the new CEO; he was formerly the CFO of Punch Bowl Social. Cornog is also involved in expanding British restaurant group Wagamama across the U.S.

As restaurants, bars and entertainment venues across the country start reopening and expanding their indoor capacities, Punch Bowl Social in Deep Ellum joins in. The venue can fit as many as 1,000 people, and a press release notes there’s “plenty of space” for those who are comfortable being indoors.

“With the nation emerging from the pandemic, we feel there is no time like the present,” new CEO Cornog says in a statement. “We are currently in the process of aggressively reopening all our locations across the country.”

The A La Bama chicken sandwich at Punch Bowl Social in Deep Ellum was a bummer in 2019, but the menu direction and list of items has changed since then, says the new CEO.

Our critic called it a “carnival of fun” in 2019, with loud music and a “roaring, amped-up crowd.” It’s the kind of place that beckons bachelorette parties, guys’ nights and company happy hours. In the Before Times, our critic didn’t like the food, saying the kitchen served a “terrible” chicken sandwich and many of the appetizers were forgettable. At the time, the menu was created in part by chef Hugh Acheson (who you’ve likely seen on Top Chef) and by Sheamus Feeley, who worked at the beloved Hillstone Restaurant Group.

Neither Acheson nor Feeley are involved in the concept now, Cornog says. Punch Bowl Social is running a limited menu but has added new brunch and happy hour options, he says.

The Deep Ellum location will be the second in Texas to reopen, after Austin. The company has locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver and more.

Punch Bowl Social is at 2600 Main St., Dallas. It reopens April 28, 2021, after being closed for 146 days.
