From The Innovators Shaping The Digital Age To The Journalists Breaking New Ground

When he started Fanbytes during his second year of university back in 2017, Timothy Armoo wanted to reinvent how brands interact with younger audiences. And in just four years, he’s become an influential leader UK’s TikTok scene, helping creators navigate new fame and fortunes while also guiding brands to reach younger audiences on emerging and existing platforms.

Armoo, who is 26, has doubled the size of the team from 27 to 57 in the past year while expanding into Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico, Nigeria and Ghana. Last year, he launched the UK’s first TikTok hype house called ByteHouse, helped the government around Covid-19 messaging and created a new fund to help support Black businesses and creators.

Armoo is just one of the members on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe Marketing And Media list that features some of Europe’s most creative and innovative marketers and founders alongside some of continent’s most intrepid young journalists.

Several honorees on this year’s list are pioneers in emerging industries such as artificial intelligence. Through her startup Sonantic, Zeena Qureshi is using AI to add emotion and other aspects of speech to create realistic voices for video game characters. And Ali Tehrani, the CEO of Astroscreen, is using AI to protect brands from social media manipulation.

Others are innovating with video and social media. At Sweden-based Memmo.me, Tobias Bengtsddahl has created a startup that connects celebrities and fans through personalized messages. Meanwhile, Timothy Colins and Hugo Leprince are helping the music industry and brands reach younger audiences on TikTok and elsewhere.

This year’s list also features several journalists that are writing stories—and in some cases writing books—about some of the most pressing topics facing Europe and the rest of the world. Yomi Adegoke writes about the intersection of race, feminism and pop culture in her columns and books. Naina Bajekal, TIME’s editorial director, oversees newsroom development while also serving as deputy international editor. Also among this year’s honorees are Nadine White, Britain’s first race correspondent for The Independent, and Ashley Kirk, a visual projects editor at The Guardian who has been tracking the Covid-19 pandemic.

Others have founded companies that continue to innovate with adtech. Through their startup Audiomob, cofounders Wilfrid Obeng and Christian Facey have built an audio advertising company for mobile gaming that lets brands like Warner and Sony reach audiences without interrupting them while they play. Matthew Goldhill’s startup Picnic has created a mobile ad marketplace that lets publishers serve up social-media style ads from brands.

Several honorees on the 2021 list come from inside some of the tech giants. At Pinterest, Hannah Ngakane—who leads social impact projects for brands like Hearst and Guap—launched Pinterest’s first-ever UK and Ireland Black History Month campaign in 2020 and also hosts a podcast highlighting the careers of Black leaders. And at Google, Laura Cincera is helping to equip people from underserved communities with new skills to thrive in the digital world.
