Mind your manners: Dear reader, let's keep the 'social' in social media - The Daily News Online

sanirbanir.blogspot.com

We receive hundreds of comments a day on our Facebook page. Many are positive, some are thought-provoking and generally show a desire by people to share their voice with a larger community.

But increasingly those comments have taken on a nasty, even violent, tenor. This is not an effective way to communicate your viewpoints and frustrated users are speaking up.

The Daily News does welcome your participation in the discussions taking place on our Facebook page. We want you to interact often and share your varied viewpoints as you comment about the stories and other content you read there.

We also want you to do it respectfully and safely. Use your comments constructively, to help build your community and, yes, that may sometimes include strong criticism.

As a newspaper company, one of our values is a commitment to free speech. We believe the public has a right to comment and express their own thoughts on the content we post and events – good and bad – in their communities. Social media should be a place for expression, and where people can have a voice.

However, just as you cannot yell “Fire!” in a crowded theater, there are limits to what you can say online.

With that in mind, if you choose to comment, we ask that you observe the following guidelines:

n First, be respectful to us and our – and your – community. We want users to feel encouraged to engage with the posts.

n Do not threaten to harm individuals, groups or organizations, or use language that incites, encourages or solicits violent acts.

n Do not bully or harass other users. We welcome civilized dialogue on all issues. It is OK to criticize and disagree with other users’ opinions, but you can do so while remaining respectful.

n Refrain from using hateful speech. Do not attack other users based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition.

n Do not use vulgar language or profanity. Such language does not make your argument stronger; it does not emphasize your point. What it does do is make you less credible to other users. The Daily News reserves the right to remove comments and posts that contain profanity or obscene language.

n Stay on topic. When commenting under an existing post, please keep comments on topic to ensure a more productive discussion.

n Do not post spam, advertisements or solicit funds. Commercial solicitations are not permitted and will be removed. If you wish to advertise, contact an advertising representative at (585) 343-8000.

n Do not post content that contains graphic violence or pornography. It will be removed.

n Refrain from posting personal information such as email addresses, telephone numbers, mailing addresses or identification numbers of other users.

n The Daily News reserves the right to reject comments that are not in keeping with these guidelines and to block or ban users who repeatedly violate these guidelines. If we believe there to be a genuine risk of physical harm or direct threat to public safety, we also may notify law enforcement.

By posting, you are agreeing that your post complies with these guidelines. Please note, we may still remove any post that we believe does not comply.

While ending the ability to comment would resolve the issues of some users’ behavior, it would defeat the purpose of using social media in the first place.

It is our desire to use social media as a way to create informative, engaging and supportive communities where users can freely share in conversations about their communities without turning the forum into a perilous place that other users fear.

We want people to be comfortable talking openly (and safely) about the issues that matter to them. We want them to add to the discussion, not distract or tear down others. We want users to be able to help our communities grow in constructive ways, not devolve into a polarized landscape of hate, hostility and bile.

Remember, Facebook’s own standards for use do not allow commenting that threatens others or is used to intimidate, exclude or silence voices, among other exclusions. You are ultimately responsible for what you post.

By following these guidelines, we can build an online community where people feel empowered to communicate and create a community that is just as strong – even with our differences – as we believe our own rural communities to be.

A final note: Comments posted by other users on our social media pages are the opinion of the commenter only and do not reflect the opinions or policies of the paper. Allowing a comment to appear does not imply endorsement of that comment. While we do our best to moderate and respond to comments, we are not responsible for the accuracy or reliability of any comments or materials posted by users.
