If the Oakland A’s do leave the Bay Area behind, team president Dave Kaval is making certain that he speaks his mind.
On Saturday, Kaval made his thoughts about the San Francisco media known, calling out a perceived bias in their coverage.

One can certainly understand where Kaval is coming from. The A’s have been fighting for a new stadium for over two decades, only to run into obstacles at every turn. Meanwhile, the Giants were able to get their new stadium, but it took their own flirtation with leaving San Francisco in order for that to happen.

Likewise, the belief that the local media has a bias towards the other Bay Area team is understandable. The A’s do not get the attention they would seemingly deserve based on their performance. Meanwhile, the Giants get a great deal of coverage for seemingly innocuous moments.
But this is not doing the A’s any favors. They had already taken a bit of a hit in the court of public perception with their trek to Las Vegas, as well as the rumors that they will head to Portland next month (although Kaval disputes those reports). Ripping the media, regardless of how well deserved it may be, will not help the cause.
Kaval is not just speaking his mind out of frustration. There are other motives at play here. It is possible that he is looking to galvanize the fanbase against the media that have discounted the team for so long, looking for that final push to make the stadium deal happen. And if it does not, then there is no reason not to burn those bridges on the way out of town.
