Don't press send!

It's a mantra made famous by former NFL coach Herm Edwards when addressing players' use of social media, which at times can create more trouble than it's worth. But in the interest of brand-building and fan popularity, players who engage on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram have a big advantage over those who don't.

Unfortunately for Bears fans, players like Khalil Mack, Mitch Trubisky and even Allen Robinson aren't active enough on any of those platforms to rank among the league's most engaging.

The NFLPA recently conducted a study of its players and their use of social media via Opendorse, and there wasn't a single Bear to be found.

Here are the 10-best social media users in the NFL right now (based on overall engagements):

  1. Odell Beckham Jr., Cleveland Browns
  2. Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  3. JuJu Smith-Schuster, Pittsburgh Steelers
  4. Julian Edelman, New England Patriots
  5. J.J. Watt, Houston Texans
  6. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks
  7. Patrick Mahomes II, Kansas City Chiefs
  8. Todd Gurley, Atlanta Falcons
  9. Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys
  10. Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles

As for the 10 players with the fastest growing social media presence? Here's that list:

  1. D.K. Metcalf, Seattle Seahawks
  2. George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers
  3. Raheem Mostert, San Francisco 49ers
  4. Darius Leonard, Indianapolis Colts
  5. Patrick Mahomes II, Kansas City Chiefs
  6. Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals
  7. Fred Warner, San Francisco 49ers
  8. Michael Gallup, Dallas Cowboys
  9. Deebo Samuel, San Francisco 49ers
  10. Steven Nelson, Pittsburgh Steelers

Beckham, Jr. ranks at the top when it comes to Instagram, while the Twitter crown belongs to Tom Brady (of course).

Are the Bears one of the worst seven teams in the NFL? That seems like a silly question with an obvious answer: No.

Sure, Chicago had a disappointing season in 2019, but they weren't atrocious. They were 8-8. They were average and were somewhat alive for the playoffs until late in the season. This is still the same team that won 12 games in 2018 (if not a better all-around roster) and with the expected improvement behind center, a 10-win season in 2020 should be the floor.

For some reason, the general perception of this Bears team is much (much!) worse than that. Check out the summer NFL mock draft circuit as an example. Chicago is almost always picking in or around the top-10, which suggests a season of six or seven wins is the expectation. This despite the additions of Robert Quinn and Nick Foles, two players who should provide significant boots in production to their sides of the ball.

Don't tell that to Mike Florio over at Pro Football Talk, however. In his latest NFL Power Rankings, he has the Bears in that bottom-seven:

25. Bears: Up and down and down and up and who knows how it will play out for a team that finally has a quarterback that fits the offense? There’s a chance it all falls together. There’s an equal chance it all falls apart.

Foles isn't an exciting quarterback. We know this. But he is (I think) a reliable quarterback who will serve as the ultimate insurance policy if Mitch Trubisky fails (again) in 2020. Unlike last season when it became clear the Bears weren't going anywhere with Trubisky, Matt Nagy will have a legitimate option to turn to this fall to salvage a playoff run. It might not even come to that; Foles could win the starting quarterback job outright in training camp (if there is one).

This team still has a championship-caliber defense, and it's hard imagining such a good defense not at least contending for a wild card spot late in December.

Bears fans know how good Khalil Mack is. In fact, "good" doesn't adequately state the game-changer Mack has been for Chicago (and Oakland before the trade). But sometimes, fans can have a skewed perspective that overrates players on their favorite team.

In the case of Mack, that isn't true.

More than 50 NFL executives, coaches, scouts and players recently picked Mack as the NFL's best edge rusher, edging out Chandler Jones (Cardinals) and Nick Bosa (49ers) for the top spot, per ESPN.

ESPN shared quotes from three defensive coaches that expressed the same sentiment: Mack is a relentless game-wrecker who can beat opposing offenses in so many ways that he's virtually impossible to stop.

The Bears traded two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and a sixth-round pick to the Raiders on the eve of the 2018 season to acquire Mack, and he instantly paid dividends. Chicago enjoyed a 12-4 season and an NFC North title in his first year with the team but regressed to 8-8 last season because of the team's inept offense.

Now entering his third year with the Bears, Mack has the most talented running-mate of his career with the addition of Robert Quinn in free agency. This could be the season Mack pushes for 20 sacks -- yes, 20 sacks -- in what's setting up to be a pretty special season for Chicago's front-seven.
