Social distancing and the ‘virus’ of lost human contact - Chicago Sun-Times

sanirbanir.blogspot.com

Today, while I was out walking, a woman approached me, asking for money for food. I believe her story was legitimate; she was very thin, and her unmasked face bore a look of desperation that would have been difficult for even the savviest street hustler to fake. Normally, I would have tried to help her out. Instead, I pulled my bandana over my face, “distanced” myself from her and scurried on my way.

I could hear her pleading as her voice receded behind me.

This is the “virus” of the soul, of the psyche. It will fester within and around us long after the physical pandemic has subsided. As we skulk along sidewalks and down supermarket aisles, hidden behind masks and sheathed in protection like D.I.Y. HAZMAT first-responders, scurrying away anytime we get within 6 feet of another human being, the atmosphere becomes ever more permeated with fear and loathing.

With every day, week and month this continues, the further entrenched and internalized it becomes. And for this, there’s no vaccine.

Vandals of Columbus statues won

Regarding Mayor Lori Lighfoot’s decision to take down the Columbus statues: The mayor should ask for a list of the next intended targets to save the so-called “peaceful protesters” the trouble. There is a right way and a wrong way to discuss and settle disputes like this. But the mayor is now a member of the vandalism crew.

Lightfoot also shares with our low-class president a talent for name-calling. Shame on her.

Welcome back, Mary Mitchell

How great that Mary Mitchell will be writing a column again. She has a clarion voice, speaking to readers on several levels. My wife and I have never picked up the Sun-Times without reading her column and discussing what she has to say on society, our city and moral needs. I’m very pleased to see her return!
