The month of July usually brings media days for conferences all across the country, which means college football is almost back. But as the month is now winding down, we are still left waiting for the first media day to take place. And we don’t know when they will be happening.

On Monday morning, the Pac-12 became the latest conference to announce it was indefinitely delaying its media days and not setting a permanent date for the event to take place. The decision was announced in a press release by the conference.

“In light of the decision by the Pac-12 CEO Group to schedule Conference-only play and to delay a move to mandatory athletic activities, the 2020 Pac-12 Football Media Days presented by 76® has been postponed until further notice,” the release read. “Originally set for July 29-31, the event will be rescheduled at a later date to be determined.”

Pac-12 Media Days had already been previously altered in early May. Initially slated to be on July 29 in Los Angeles, California, the Pac-12 decided on May 7, 2020, that instead the league would be moving the event to an online format, becoming the second conference to make that call after the Big 12 Conference decided it would also be moving to an online format.

But Media Days being postponed is not the only major change to the coming football season that the conference has been forced to make because of the coronavirus pandemic. The move by the Pac-12 to delay media days comes 10 days after the conference made a major decision to switch to a conference-only schedule in 2020. The Pac-12 followed the Big Ten in that move.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes and all those connected to Pac-12 sports continues to be our number one priority,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “Our decisions have and will be guided by science and data, and based upon the trends and indicators over the past days, it has become clear that we need to provide ourselves with maximum flexibility to schedule, and to delay any movement to the next phase of return-to-play activities.”

The conference announced it is also delaying the start of mandatory athletic activities, until a series of health and safety indicators, which have recently trended in a negative direction, provided sufficient positive data to enable a move to a second phase of return-to-play activities.

“Competitive sports are an integral part of the educational experience for our student-athletes, and we will do everything that we can to support them in achieving their dreams while at the same time ensuring that their health and safety is at the forefront,” said Michael Schill, Pac-12 CEO Group Chair and President of the University of Oregon.
