Rockets star James Harden practiced at the NBA's restart campus for the first time Thursday, but it was his choice of mask as he walked around the NBA Bubble that had him trending on Twitter.
The Rockets tweeted out a photo of Harden wearing a mask that the team captioned "Mask Up." The face covering appears to feature the "Thin Blue Line" and a Punisher skull. The "Thin Blue Line" often is seen as being in opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement and the Punisher skull often is associated with far-right groups.

On Friday, Harden clarified that he didn't know anything about the design of the mask.
“I felt like it was just something to cover my whole face, my beard,” he said. “Masks that I’ve worn before kind of stopped right here (points at chin). It was just something to cover my whole beard. I thought it looked cool. That’s it.”
During interviews Thursday, Harden spoke glowingly of how Houston rallied together in protest of the George Floyd killing.
“The way the city just, like, rallied, it was amazing," Harden said. "I think the world saw it, how so many people could come together so close. Obviously, it was for a tragic reason, but the marching and everything we’re standing for is very powerful.”
Harden also said he's considering putting a social justice message on the back of his jersey when the season resumes.
“I’m in the process of figuring out if I’m going to put a message on my back or another way to deliver my message,” he said. “But somehow, my message is going to get across. I’m in the process of figuring out if the jersey name is the best idea or another way.”

None of that stopped Twitter users from mocking the mask Thursday night. Some weren't as light-hearted. Singer Trey Songz said Harden's mask was "Certified clown sh--. I’ll say it for everybody who scared to."
Rapper Young Thug came to Harden's defense, saying the Rockets star doesn't "have internet so he obviously don't know what's right or wrong if he posted something that's against US."
