ANN ARBOR, MI - University of Michigan students are being required to observe a 14-day period of “enhanced social distancing” at home before returning to campus for classes this fall, the university announced Monday.

The letter to UM students on Aug. 3 states that, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, returning students must monitor their health, reduce contact with others and follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including:

  • Taking their temperature two times a day and monitor for fever.
  • Watching for cough, trouble breathing or additional COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Staying home and avoiding contact with others outside their home -- including not going to work, school or social gatherings.
  • Avoiding public transportation, taxis or ride-shares.
  • Maintaining a physical distance from others (about six feet).
  • Wearing a face covering when in public settings or while interacting with others outside of the home.
  • Seeking medical attention if they develop a fever, other symptoms and/or test positive for COVID-19.

Students moving into UM Housing, including residence halls and apartments, are expected to be tested for COVID-19 – and cleared – prior to their arrival in Ann Arbor, the university states.

UM is partnering with Quest Diagnostics to provide testing kits, at no additional cost, directly to students to self-administer and mail back to Quest for analysis. Students who plan to live in on-campus housing will receive an email next week with additional information and instructions on testing.

Students arriving from international locations will begin their 14-day period of enhanced social distancing when they arrive in their on- or off-campus residence. If a student’s arrival date overlaps with the start of classes, they are expected not to go to classes in person until the 14-day period is complete.

New international students who plan to study in the United States for the fall term must choose some in-person or hybrid classes, and be enrolled full-time. They are not limited to a specific number of online credits, but their classes cannot be completely online, UM states.

Most students will be able to choose whether to return to campus or remain at their permanent residence to study remotely, based on their choice of courses.

Currently available data and registrations indicate approximately 70% of credits for undergraduates can be taken remotely this fall, while many hybrid courses also offer the option to attend remotely as well.

Students who have already signed housing contracts will be allowed to cancel without penalty until Aug. 14, the university states. Students with housing contracts who study remotely in the fall semester can apply for housing in the winter semester if conditions allow, the university noted in amending its current rules.

UM says it’s building a plan for evaluating students with suspected COVID-19 symptoms including testing when indicated, through University Health Services. The university will have support and space, both on and off campus, available for any student who develops symptoms or tests positive, and needs to quarantine or isolate safely. This includes meal delivery.

The university is offering a combination of in-person, remote and hybrid classes this fall. In general, small classes will continue to meet in person, but larger lecture classes will be delivered remotely.

UM’s fall semester begins on Aug. 31, while move-in will take place starting Aug. 24.
