The Alabama Department of Public Health said a chart circulating on social media related to the state’s coronavirus numbers is incorrect.

In a series of tweets, ADPH said the chart is not published by the state health agency, which provides data on its Dashboard. And while that data is used for parts of the chart, it has been “misrepresented,” ADPH said.

“Using these data in an incorrect manner creates erroneous assumptions. We do not agree with the presentation of the data in this table, nor do we support any of its conclusions,” ADPH said.

The raw numbers used in the chart are taken from ADPH, but the agency disputes the assumptions made by its numbers.

“The chart is representing proportion of the population who have been reported to ADPH with COVID-19. They are not calculating odds. An odds ratio (OR) is a measure of association that quantifies the relationship between an exposure with two categories and health outcome (individuals with disease versus individuals without disease). This measure of association is the typically used for case-control studies. It is not simply a percentage of the total population,” ADPH said.

“Additionally, a person is not at risk for hospitalization and death attributable to COVID-19 unless they have had the disease. The total population of Alabama is the inappropriate number to divide by.”

ADPH pointed the public top its Risk Indicator Dashboard for accurate information on the tests.
