How the media fails us - The Herald-News

To the Editor:

The past few years the term ”fake news” has become used by many as a means of questioning the content of media reporting. I personally think it is good to question the information that is given to you. However, we shouldn’t frighten people into believing everyone is lying to us or has some underlying secret agenda. What we should do is be critical thinkers.

Having said this I am left wondering, “Where does the media fail us?” I have spent an enormous amount of time, thanks to COVID-19, combing through my representatives' voting records. I quickly became upset, no, not because of their dismal voting records, but because of my ignorance. I starting researching the internet and was having a hard time deciphering the process of a bill’s path in Congress or its content.

We whine and complain, especially me, about things that affect us. This is where the media is failing us. I understand the desire to report on hot topics, popular topics, or even your own biased topics. However, if you truly are an important entity in a great democracy, your job is to inform us.

You take our knowledge for granted. Who is representing us in Congress? What are they voting on and why? How did they actually vote and what was their reasoning? My opinion: calling you fake news is a low blow but to call you irresponsible is right on target.
