Winners distance themselves from pursuers at Alaska 'Social' Distance Classic - Anchorage Daily News

The Alaska Distance Classic adjusted to the summer of COVID-19 by becoming the Alaska “Social” Distance Classic on Saturday morning.

After three weeks of virtual racing, the Classic’s in-person component offered flexible start times at Point Woronzof Park and separate 5K and 10K courses that went in opposite directions on the Coastal Trail in an effort to ensure social distancing for participants.

Josh Taylor of Wasilla put plenty of space between himself and his nearest competitor — at least according to the race clock — to win the Double-Up title for runners choosing to run both courses.

He finished the combined 15 kilometers in 58 minutes, 42 seconds, and was the only person to do both courses in less than an hour. Eric Roggow placed second in 1:04:20, and Samuel Grosse was third in 1:08:22.

Kari Skinner of Anchorage topped the women’s portion of the Double-Up in 1:10:23, more than a minute faster than runner-up Meredyth Richards (1:11:50). Skinner placed fifth in the overall results.

Taylor clocked the fastest 5K time of the day, 18:14, recorded on a challenging course. Isaac Main was second in 18:47.

Ava Earl paced the women in the 5K with a time of 19:38, which placed her fourth overall. Lucy Young was second among women in 20:01.

In the 10K race, held on a flat, fast course, wins went to Eric Vilce (38:10) and Emily Evans (43:23). Taylor was fourth (40:28).

Skinner placed in the top 5 in each race en route to her Double-Up victory. She was fifth in the 5K (24:03) and fourth in the 10K (46:20).
