Millions of sleepy eyes went wide Friday morning as the world learned of President Donald Trump and Melania Trump’s positive COVID-19 tests. New Jerseyans were likely even more surprised to find Trump was at his Bedminster golf course only hours earlier for a fundraiser.
Though stock markets across the globe wasted no time in tumbling overnight after Trump’s 1 a.m. Twitter announcement, most of us were sound asleep, unaware of the latest surreal 2020 news event — will the chaos ever cease?
Many took to Twitter to chime in on the shocking news. Insomniacs spent the early morning tweeting away, before the 8 a.m. droves logged on with fresh variations of “oh my God."
While many extended sympathies and well-wishes to Trump, some questioned whether he had, in fact, tested positive.
Skeptics suggested the news was a campaign tactic. Some theorized, for instance, that Trump wanted to avoid the next two debates with Joe Biden. Or divert attention from his tax returns.
Others wondered if Trump’s announcement was intended to generate some kind of emotional reaction from the public — that the sympathy was part of a plan. They pointed to public support for Boris Johnson, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, during and after his treatment for COVID-19.
“Given the ‘bump’ that Boris Johnson got after his recovery, and (T)rump’s awareness of this fact, does any one really think that at least some of what we’re being told is a total contrivance,” asked Neil Brown, a retired teacher from Trenton.
David Simon, the creator of “The Wire,” was among those questioning Trump’s COVID-19 news.
“Honestly, when a man lies so damn much, am I wrong to imagine another cry of wolf for an October surprise?” Simon tweeted.
“That Trump is claiming a positive test, will present as asymptomatic, or claim himself cured with bleach, then dismiss COVID again as a Democratic hoax? I’m wrong, right?”
2020 is so surreal no one knows what to believe anymore.
Here’s a collection of reactions from social media marking yet another climax in one of the most bizarre and unpredictable years of our lifetimes.
