LEXINGTON, Ky. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced the finalists for the Grant Burger Media Award, and the Purdue Fort Wayne Media Services office was selected as the finalist for the men's sports information director category.

The AVCA Grant Burger Media Award is an honor intended to recognize members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball through consistent coverage in all mediums. It is named in honor of Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.

The Purdue Fort Wayne Athletic Media Services department was tasked with celebrating the 40th anniversary of the IPFW/Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball program in 2020-21. Between its three SIDs: Derrick Sloboda, Aaron Johnson and Alissa Volante, and one video coordinator: Bray Snyder, the Purdue Fort Wayne office delivered consistent content throughout the 2020-21 academic year to celebrate the anniversary of one of the best men's programs in the country.

The primary focus of the celebration was a deep dive into the history of the program, which saw the office delve into newspaper clippings from more than 40 years ago to learn and report on the founding of the program, interview former head coach of 35 years, Arnie Ball, write a historical feature, and publish "Mastodon Moments" to celebrate some of the best moments in program history. They also fully produced the department's awards virtual presentation.

In addition to their dedication to their men's volleyball history and 40th anniversary celebration, they were also responsible for promoting their teams' first season in the Horizon League (all sports but men's volleyball). While pushing content focused on the anniversary, the office continued to promote both volleyball programs throughout the 2020-21 season. Even though all 16 of their sports were active in the spring semester and employees were required to furlough throughout the year, the Mastodon media services office never slowed their consistent production of content, a large portion of which was done remotely. They even produced a great flow of features throughout the summer and fall, when athletics had shut down entirely. They adapted to these challenges and produced fresh and unique content.

Mike Placek from CollegeBeachVB.com was selected as the recipient of the overall 2020-21 AVCA Grant Burger Media Award.
