A casual reading of the readily available reports about “the 1997 incident” leave me no reasonable doubt that new Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups participated in a gang rape of a woman whose delicate tissues were left damaged and who received a cash payment for her silence. In what universe can this be construed as consensual sex? We were continually reminded on the scoreboard screen this past season that the mission of the Trail Blazers is to amplify the voices of people who have been marginalized – those whose voices routinely go unheard. This call for social justice apparently does not apply to victims of sexual assault or the ever-growing chorus of fans who feel violated by this choice of a new coach for our team.
