'I hate it here' trends on social media as Texans react to lifted mask mandate - Chron

If you think Texas Governor Greg Abbott lifting the mask mandate is absolutely absurd, you are not alone.

After news broke Tuesday afternoon of the governor's dramatic reopening announcement, the phrase "I hate it here" began to trend on Texas Twitter. And whether you click the hashtag or not, it's not hard to figure out why.

The Lone Star State is still seeing an alarming number of positive coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, and just this week Houston became the first U.S. city to record positive tests for every major variant of the virus.

DISAPPOINTED, NOT SURPRISED: Chron readers had plenty to say about Gov. Greg Abbott lifting Texas' mask mandate

"We must now do more to restore livelihoods and normalcy for Texans by opening Texas 100 percent," said Abbott in a statement. "Make no mistake, COVID-19 has not disappeared, but it is clear from the recoveries, vaccinations, reduced hospitalizations and safe practices that Texans are using that state mandates are no longer needed."

Texans, quite frankly, disagree.

They even accused the governor of playing a real-life version of  "The Hunger Games" with their lives.

Even so, there were still tons of Texans who are glad the mandate was lifted and telling those who "hate it here" to just leave if they're so strongly opposed.

Does this mean Spongebob and Patrick were right about Texas all along?
