Topline

Former President Donald Trump will launch his own social media platform in the next two to three months, one of his senior advisors said Sunday, promising that it "will be the hottest ticket in social media" after he was banned from Twitter, Facebook and other platforms.

Key Facts

Speaking to Fox News' #MediaBuzz on Sunday, Jason Miller, a spokesperson for Trump’s 2020 campaign, said the former president will return to social media in "about two to three months on his own platform."

Miller said Trump has been having "a lot of high-powered meetings" at Mar-a-Lago with "numerous" companies that have approached the former president to work together on a social media platform.

Miller claimed the new platform "is going to be big," with tens of millions of users, but he provided no firm details.

Crucial Quote

"This is something that I think will be the hottest ticket in social media," Miller said Sunday. "It's going to completely redefine the game, and everybody's going to be waiting and watching to see what exactly President Trump does, but it will be his own platform."

Key Background

Following the January 6 attack on the Capitol, a number of social media companies banned the president from their platforms citing concerns over further incitement of violence. Twitter, Trump's long-standing platform of choice, permanently suspended his account on January 8 after determining that his tweets after the riots were "highly likely to encourage and inspire people to replicate the criminal acts that took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6." A company review board will decide whether his expulsion from Facebook and Instagram will be permanent, while YouTube has indicated that his account’s suspension there could be lifted. Trump has largely steered clear of public appearances and statements since leaving office–save for a long-winded speech at a conservative conference in February and a few press releases that Miller on Sunday touted as "getting almost more play" than anything Trump ever tweeted.

Chief Critic

Conservative social media platform Gab, which created a Trump account that Miller in February said was "fake," blasted Trump's new venture in now-deleted tweets, saying: "If it's run anything like the 2020 campaign it will be a complete and total failure. No app stores. No hosting providers. No payment processors. No free speech. Good luck!." Within minutes, Gab's Twitter account appeared no longer active.
