Ricky and Ashley Plum started the podcast Crime Salad together three years ago —mixing Ricky’s love of musical equipment and Ashley’s love of photography and documentaries. “I feel like we have a good connection and that’s really important,” Ashley said.

EAST PALESTINE — East Palestine High School graduate Ricky Plum and wife Ashley Plum have an interest in creating artistic media.

A few years ago the couple decided to put their creative talents together and produce a podcast reflecting Ashley’s interest in true crime.

“I was kind of force-fed podcasts from her,” Ricky said about all the crime stories during their daily commute.

After watching documentaries and listening to podcasts Ashley believed she could create something interesting too.

Crime Salad started to form as the couple began researching and forming their personal style.

“When we created our show we ended up naming it Crime Salad because we wanted it to be a snack-sized bite. Something that you could consume in your lunch break or your 20-minute commute,” Ricky said.

Beginning the Crime Salad was challenging while the Plums managed jobs and creating Crime Salad. The couple recalls working all night to air episodes at 5 a.m.

“It’s been a lot of work and I feel like we are getting up over that hill a little bit more and it’s rewarding at this point but what kept us going was our creative drive,” Ashley said.

A recent deal with iHeart Radio generates marketing opportunities for Crime Salad. Another contract with Cloud 10 expands development. Ricky explained the deals increase collaboration and resources.

Crime Salad is not a podcast intended to sensationalize true crime cases. Instead, the Plums want people experiencing similar situations to be encouraged to come forward and have a voice.

Ricky and Ashley believe the causes of these crime make awareness important.

“These things happen everywhere to anyone,” Ricky said.

Crime Salad veers away from victim shaming those involved with crimes.

“What it really comes down to is that just because of someone’s actions or lifestyle or choices or the lifestyle they live, we never say ‘oh, they had it coming.’ We don’t look at it from that angle,” Ricky said. “The angle we always look at it is that an evil person or someone with bad intentions did a bad thing to someone.”

Crime Salad makes a point to give hotline numbers aligned with the topic of the episode.

Ashley takes opportunities to tell her son to be more alert and stay away from people and situations that make him feel unsafe.

“It’s really important to be aware of your surroundings, instead of being naive of what’s going on around you,” Ashley said.

Ashley and Ricky Plum invite listeners to listen to Crime Salad on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Google Play.
