A battle over the limits of free expression is being waged online between 49ers fans and the franchise’s social media team through just one quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, as fans calling for a coaching change saw their comments hidden on social media.
After the first 15 minutes of game time were up, the Niners’ Twitter account put up a graphic showing the score after the first period of action, with Arizona up 14-0. Fans were understandably not happy with the team as the offense had put up disappointing drive after disappointing drive and the defense was getting cooked by Colt McCoy.
Some fans took it upon themselves to demand that Kyle Shanahan be removed in place of former Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh led San Francisco from 2011 to 2014, taking the Niners to a Super Bowl and finishing with a winning record in all but one of his seasons in charge — that was 2014, when he finished 8-8. But you wouldn’t find many of those calls at first glance, as they were hidden from the replies section of the tweet.
Fans of a struggling football team demanding a coaching change, particularly in favor of a former successful coach, is nothing new on social media. The Niners dropped to 3-5 after a 31-17 loss to Arizona, and more people are starting to realize these results aren't much better than what Chip Kelly did during his disastrous tenure. Still, one has to wonder why these comments from this disgruntled fan base were considered taboo seemingly all of a sudden.
However, fans might not get a clear answer on that either as the Niners have since unhidden those replies from the tweet after some people drew attention to it on social media.
